Lesson Study Group at Mills College

The preeminent force in bring Lesson Study from Japan, where it originated, to the United States is Catherine Lewis, senior research scientist at Mills College, in the San Francisco Bay area. This site features her work with Lesson Study as well as a rich supply of resources for those interested in learning more about this professional development tool. For a wonderful insight into the power of Lesson Study, there is a clip of a Lesson Study meeting. In this dramatic video, the team discusses a lesson that had been developed by the team and just been taught to a group of students. The teachers find a problem and begin to revise their lesson plan. The entire video is available for purchase from the college. Other videos demonstrating Lesson Study are also available through the site, many of which have segments that can be viewed on-line. Northwest Regional Educational Lab

The Northwest Regional Educational Lab has been a valuable resource for Lesson Study in the Pacific Northwest. They have offered Lesson Study training at area teacher leadership conferences conferences. The Spring 2003 issue of Northwest Teacher, published by the Northwest Regional Educational Lab, features Lesson Study teams from Oregon and Washington. A team of sixth-grade teachers from North Marion Middle School in Aurora, Oregon, is profiled in "A Lesson Study Team Steps Into the Spotlight." Altering the Structure and Culture of American Public Schools

This article, published in the "Phi Delta Kappan," discusses how Lesson Study can redesign the process of teaching. The author, Wellford Wilms, warns readers that it will take a fundamental redesign of school culture for this process to be widely and effectively used.
