National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)

Washington State Governor, Christine Gregoire, signing Senate Bill 6657. This bill allows the National Board stipend to be counted towards retirement beginning June 12, 2008.

District Support for National Board Certification Candidates - An increasing number of school districts in Washington commit resources to support teachers who undertake the rigorous process of National Board Certification. (Washington Superintendent of Public Instructions)

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has defined a process for certifying the professional practice of teachers who meet high and rigorous standards. Over 1800 Washington teachers have responded to the challenge of becoming nationally board certified — and have become more accomplished teachers through the process.

Interested in NBPTS but not ready to jump all the way in? Take One!® is a unique offering from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® that provides a standards-based approach for improving teaching practice and links student learning to effective instruction. Teachers prepare and submit one pre-selected video portfolio entry from any of the current certificate areas of National Board Certification. Click here to learn more.


Portfolio Scoring - NBPTS will have a portfolio scoring site in Washington again this summer. The application to score is not yet available, but if you or your colleagues are interested please save the dates. Scoring will be in Federal Way from 7/14-8/1 for the following certificate areas:
  • EMC Literacy
  • EA/Mathematics
  • ECYA School Counseling
  • EA Social Studies/History
  • AYA Social Studies/History

Washington ranked fifth nationwide in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers for 2007 and ranks 10th in the total number of teachers who achieved certification over time
