Summer Opportunities for Teacher Leaders

CSTP is offering several great professional learning opportunities this summer.....

Dilemmas in Providing Support for New Teachers:Learn to Write An Effective Case Study

We are seeking Washington public school educators who support new teachers and are interested in learning how to turn their own practical experience into a tool others can use. We will publish a series of case studies intended to explore effective induction practices, the contributions mentors and colleagues make to those just entering the profession, and the lessons learned by people doing this challenging work. We are particularly interested in stories that illustrate the five standards of quality induction:

- Hiring practices that honor the unique needs and powerful potential of beginning teachers
- Orientation to school district beliefs and practices
- Strong relationship with a highly qualified mentor
- Engagement in purposeful, ongoing, formal and informal learning opportunities
- Formative assessment focused on improving teaching practice

Applicants must be able to attend both: June 30 - July 2 (Spokane) and August 5-7 (Seattle). Final products will be due September 1. A course fee of $150 covers seminar, meals, and lodging. Travel assistance is also available. Writers must bring a laptop computer. Applications due March 10.

Advocacy to Improve Teaching Quality

We are seeking Washington public school educators around the state who are willing to act as spokes-persons in their community advocating for state and local policies that support quality teaching. This cadre will talk with legislators, editorial boards, reporters, district administrators and other policymakers about instructional quality and the supports we need to make sure every student receives quality instruction.

Workshop will be held August 11-13 in North Bend. Course fee of $100 will pay for seminar, meals, and lodging. Applications due April 18.
