You Earned National Board Certification, Now what?

Lead presenter: Kelli Femont assisted by Debra Howell and Andrea Peterson, all NBCTs.

The session focused on discussions around leadership qualities we find in other leaders as well as with ourselves. NBCTs discussed ways to become more involved at the school district and state level by moving into leadership roles. The group consisted of nearly 50 participants including many NEW NBCTs! The WNN web site was discussed and everyone was encouraged to visit it and become more actively involved in contacting policymakers.

2nd Congressional District Representative Rick Larsen meets with Andrea Peterson, NBCT at Monte Cristo Elementary, Granite Falls School District in October, 2006

“My visit with Congressman Larsen was a real eye opener! I was impressed with his attentiveness and insightful questions. He asked me about curriculum choice, classroom management, cross-curricular applications and much more. In retrospect, I wish I had been a little more prepared. It occurred to me that I should have had questions for him, as well. What does he see as the major issues in Washington’s education system? What needs are the most pressing in his view? The answers to these questions would have been very enlightening. I think as advocates for education we need to understand where our policymakers are coming from, before we can expect to influence actual policy.”
