2008 Leadership Case Writing
Seminar
" Dilemmas in Providing Support for New Teachers:
Learn To Write An Effective Case Study"
CSTP is seeking Washington public school educators who
support new teachers and are interested in learning how to
turn their own practical experience into a tool others can
use. We will publish a series of case studies intended to
explore effective induction practices, the contributions mentors
and colleagues make to those just entering our profession,
and the lessons learned by people doing this challenging work.
The case you write may be discussed in university classrooms,
in school district professional development programs, or at
a symposium for mentors and instructional coaches. We are
particularly interested in stories that illustrate the five
standards of quality induction:
- hiring practices that honor the unique needs and powerful
potential of beginning teaches
- orientation to school district beliefs and practices
- strong relationship with a highly qualified mentor
- engagement in purposeful, ongoing, formal and informal
learning opportunities
- formative assessment focused on improving teaching practice

Grant Seeking for Educators
Is There Philanthropic Money Available for Education?
Yes! Education is the second highest private foundation priority
in the nation. Donors are eagerly searching for opportunities
to invest in public education. State and Federal granting
agencies also have substantial resources to support classroom
and school level innovation and the necessary tools that may
not be part of standard district funding streams. Corporate
funders are increasingly interested in funding both the academic
and applied skill development students need to ensure a bright
future for the employment pool and our county's vitality.
Science, technology, engineering and math are paramount in
the vision for a qualified workforce, post-secondary success
and active citizenship. The key to tapping these resources
is identifying a funding source that is a good fit and then
submitting a quality proposal demonstrating your capacity
to actualize results.

Believe it or not, CSTP turned four
in 2007! To mark the occasion, a dozen or so "Friends of
CSTP" gathered at Sun Mountain Resort near Winthrop to
discuss CSTPs efforts to support teacher leadership over
the past four years and which direction we might take moving
forward. The retreat took place in late October. Two days of
rich discussions rendered several recommendations.

Small investments, big returns
Increasing the
effectiveness of teacher professional development
Since 2003, the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession
(CSTP) has awarded leadership grants for teachers to explore
different approaches to professional development, among them
building collaborative professional communities, tailoring
workshops to closely match teachers' needs, participating
in lesson study and using teacher cadres to test new methods
for teaching science.

Leadership
Opportunity Grants:
CSTP awards small grants to National Board Certified Teachers so they
can lead high-quality professional development in their schools and
districts. This practice has proven to be extremely effective with
NBCTs, allowing them the opportunityto bring precious professional
development dollars into their setting, to exercise their leadership
in a way that makes local impact and involves colleagues with professional
development strategies that make positive impacts on student learning.
It also allows leaders to personalize professional development to
the needs of their students. In situations where the entire school
is involved with the learning opportunity funded by the grant, common
language, common vision and new appreciation for the expertise of
colleagues can also result. The grant amounts are small
($5,000 maximum request) but the impacts have been powerful. From
an elementary school staff member engaged in perfecting mathematics
lessons:
" It is amazing. It's not just studying one little lesson.
The best part of it is sitting down together and sharing what we
are doing with kids and how we do it. The synergy is one of the
best things I've seen and I've been teaching since '85."
And from a teacher provided time to observe in colleagues' classrooms:
"Everyone is now wanting more opportunity to be in other teachers'
classrooms ... because you can talk all you like about curriculum
and management, but it is a whole other ballgame to see it in action."
A brief descriptions of grants awarded in the past:
