The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has been tasked by the 2009 Legislature with implementation of a beginning educator support program in five to fifteen school districts and/or regional consortia. This program – intended to provide an enhanced level of support for the development of early career educators – is grounded in a growing national research base.

Improving student performance in mathematics is the focus of considerable attention in Washington state. Most agree that improving mathematics teaching and support for mathematics instruction is key, but there is a lack of consensus on how best to accomplish these goals. This study, commissioned by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, provides Washington educators and policymakers with information regarding the nature and context of mathematics teaching in Washington high schools. A recent study published in the Teachers College Record concluded that the teaching norms of egalitarianism / equality, seniority and autonomy, studied over two decades ago, are still influential constructs among teachers today, even as teacher leadership roles have expanded to move forward school reform efforts. The 2009 Legislature passed, and the Governor is expected to sign House Bill 2003 that charges the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) to change its composition and continue and start work in educator preparation, certification and ongoing professional development. These changes, and in general the work of the PESB, have a significant impact the teaching profession. Read more »
