Mission of the State Board of Education:

The State Board's role in the K-12 system is to lead the development of state policy, provide system oversight, and advocate for student success.

The Board has three overarching goals, to:

  1. Improve achievement for all students,
  2. Improve graduation rates, and
  3. Improve student preparation for post-secondary education and the 21st century world of work and citizenship.

The State Board of Education is composed of 16 education, community and business leaders and students from across Washington.

What is the Board's role in curriculum?

The legislature required the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to recommend up to three math curricular programs each for elementary, middle and high school. The Board is required to "provide review and formal comment on proposed recommendations" to OSPI regarding math curricula. The Board's Math Panel and independent consultant, assisted in the review of recommendations and reviews done by OSPI on the curricula programs.

The Board received its consultant's review of the K-8 math curriculum and provided feedback to OSPI in November 2008. The Board received its consultant's review on the high school curriculum and provided feedback to OSPI in March 2009. OSPI is considering next steps based on the Board's feedback.
