Multicultural Education Workshops Offered

The Washington State Association for Multicultural Education is offering a several workshops in 2010.

Strategies to Address Racial Harassment -- January 14, 2010. Racial harassment cases have more than doubled since the early 1990s. The alarming increase indicates professionals must create workplace environments that prevent racial harassment. Join an interactive session to discuss effective intervention/prevention strategies that can be implemented in workplace and educational settings to address racial harassment issues and concerns.

Sugar and Spice, But Not Always Nice: Gender, Bias and Aggression in Adolescent Girls -- February 26, 2010. "Mean girls" is more than just a casual term to describe a passing phase in life. Examine how the intersections between how gender differences and gender norms result in alternate relational, indirect, and social aggression in adolescent girls.

What I Said and What I Meant: Improving Cross-Cultural Communications -- March 12, 2010. Humans communicate on many levels: spoken language, tone, body language, style and personality. The fact that we have complex cultural identities and a host of differing past experiences increases the probability of cross-cultural miscommunications. This workshop presents major cross-cultural communication theories; ways that cultural values, power, privilege and differences affect the way we communicate; tools for questioning assumptions; and ways to improve cross-cultural communications skills.

Cultural Competence in the Classroom -- April 23, 2010. What cultural factors can have a significant effect on the learning process? What is the impact of a teacher's culture and background on student achievement? How can unintended conflict be avoided with students and others whose cultures and backgrounds are different from that of the classroom teacher, administrator, or staff? Participants will develop valuable insights to help them communicate and work more effectively with students, parents and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Role of Whites in a Multicultural Society -- May 14, 2010. Move beyond denial, guilt and fear to take an honest look at race relations in America and define a positive role for whites in a diverse society. Participants will explore the concept of white privilege and why it is invisible to some; explore models of unity; consult on ways to bridge barriers between whites and people of color to construct harmonious and productive relationships. We may not be responsible for the past, but together we can take responsibility for the future. This workshop is for people of all colors.
