NBCT Network Newsletters: December 2008

Have you ever wondered who really is responsible for what in the American education system?

Well, so have we! This is Debra and Andrea back again to remind you about the Washington NBCT Network, dedicated to connecting NBCTs to their policy makers. Our third year continues to be sponsored by the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP).

We have a bit of a new focus this year! After 3 years of empowering NBCTs to foster a relationship with their local policymaker, we have realized that the term "policymaker" needs some definition. So often we think of our "policymakers" as state legislators. And, while those relationships are extremely important, our influence as NBCTs needs to extend to ALL parties concerned with educational policy. That includes (but is not limited to) local school boards, ESDs, OSPI, the state legislature, the federal government and the Department of Education. All of these bodies have some responsibility within our education system. We simply believe that NBCTs, who have demonstrated that they are accomplished, are logical advocates able to provide a unique perspective to these policymakers. We want your voice to be heard!

It is with this goal in mind, that we will focus each month on a different "stakeholder" in the education arena. For the month of December, our focus is the local school board. Have you ever wondered what your local school board actually controls? Have you ever wanted to address your school board on an issue, but didn't know how to go about it? See the following link for ideas on how to help your school board understand the realities of today's classrooms: School Board. From sample PowerPoint presentations to school board member interviews, you'll find everything you need to successfully advocate for your students in front of your local board.  And remember, you can always visit http://cstp-wa.org/get-involved/nbct-network for general ideas on how to engage any legislator in a meaningful conversation about what matters most: student learning!  And one last thought... the Governor's budget came out today.  National Board stipends are solidly in there, which is great. However, support for new teachers, support for math and science professional development, part of the I728 funds, levy equalization and next year's COLA are all gone. This might be the year ALL teachers should read the budget, follow the discussion and express their opinions about where the state spends its money. Check out the budget at http://www.ofm.wa.gov/budget09/bills/Operating.pdf

This is the time to truly start pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and make a difference!
