About three in 10 teachers in Washington will decide to leave the profession after their first few years on the job.
The Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and the Office of Superintendent for Public Instruction (OSPI) have identified the support beginning teachers need to keep them in the classroom — optimal practices in hiring, orientation, mentoring, professional development and the assessment of new teachers.
With support from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, seven districts and two Educational Service Districts in Washington formed the New Teacher Alliance and committed to using the Beginning Teacher Induction standards to improve the odds of retaining the teachers they hire and ensuring their teachers quickly become effective in helping students achieve.
