OSPI High Performance Mentoring: Cultural Competency

As with teaching, becoming a skillful mentor is a developmental process. What are the characteristics (knowledge, skills, and dispositions) of effective instructional mentors of first and second year teachers in the area of cultural competence and how do we further develop these characteristics? What strategies and tools can help guide our continuing development as we guide the development of the cultural competence of others?

A new training series  -- High Performance Mentoring: Cultural Competency -- has been developed to address these questions for experienced mentors, coaches, principals, administrators, and others who support beginning teachers.
  In this series, participants will:

  1. develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be "culturally competent;"
  2. engage in learning-focused conversations (Lipton, Wellman) with emphasis on skill refinement and development of cultural competence; and
  3. integrate strategies for enhancing cultural competencies in others through their roles, responsibilities, and intentions as growth agents.

The four-day training will be held at Puget Sound ESD in Renton on  January 13-14 and February 22-23. There is no fee to participate; however, registrants must have completed both OSPI Mentor Academy I and OSPI Mentor Academy II prior to the training -- NO EXCEPTIONS. Participants are expected to commit to all four days of training. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Travel and substitute expenses are the responsibility of participants.
