Research in Process

With a team at the University of Washington, CSTP is investigating the supports needed to effectively teach linguistically diverse populations. This research utilizes a case study approach with four strategically sampled districts in Washington state (Evergreen, Everett, Walla Walla and Grandview). We will identify systems of support for mainstream teachers in classrooms with a few English Language Learner students and little support or training. When concluded in March, the study will describe roles and strategies that the state and local educators can employ in addressing the needs of these teachers so they can support the needs of their students.

With Inverness Research, CSTP examined the supports, conditions and experiences necessary for elementary teachers in Washington to improve their science teaching.  The report, to be published in March, will underscore the importance of identifying strong, committed teachers and building their science knowledge and skills rather than relying on "science geeks" to provide instructional leadership.
