Rocking the Regional Writing Workshop

Olympia -- 3 Session Writing Workshop

If you have been meaning to start or re-start your practice of writing, or try your hand at a new genre, this workshop is for you!  Eli Hastings, Hugo House writer/teacher, will lead a three session writing workshop called "Rocking the Regional" in Olympia. The workshop will focus participants on discovering their setting, i.e. Tennessee Jones' badlands; James Lee Burke's Louisiana; Benjamin Percy's Oregon; Junot Diaz's New York; Donald Ray Pollock's bruised hometown of Knockemstiff, Ohio.  Somehow, as we globalize by the nanosecond, haunting literature of place has found a great appetite in the literary market. We'll wash our tent poles in this stream of localism -- through the "new masculine" of Percy or the ocean hopping eyes of Diaz. Participants will come out the other end with an essay or short story that spotlights where we come from.

Sessions are scheduled from 6 - 10 p.m. on January 6, 13, and 20. Jan. 27 will be used as a back up for bad weather. The fee is $150 for the three sessions and the class is limited to 10 people. Click here to RSVP.
